| ANIME - Kobato |

Kobato. (TV Series 2009– ) - IMDb
SYNOPSIS: Kobato was tasked to fill a bottle up of konpeito by healing the hearts of people. She helped a lot of people along the way.

GENRE: Drama, Romance, Comedy
NUMBER OF EPISODES: 24
RATING: 6.8/10
I enjoyed watching this anime for the pureness and heartwarming feeling that it gave me. Kobato was an adorable character. I loved seeing her relationship with others develop, especially with Fujimoto (although, Fujimoto was a jerk in the beginning). She truly wanted to help others, even if it doesn't help her mission. I just wished that it wasn't emphasized in almost every episode that she's kind of dumb and a klutz. It wasn't necessarily bad, but they just did it for comedic effect, and you get fed up with it. You might find it annoying at some point. The character I truly loved is Ioryogi. He's funny, but he tries his best to push Kobato, and call her out when she's being dumb.

The story was more character-driven, so you won't necessarily see a progression in the plot. Sometimes it felt repetitive, especially since most of the issues that Kobato encountered focused on misunderstandings. If only they talked about it on their own. You can feel that the anime has 24 episodes, meaning its kind of slow-paced.

I wish that there were more discussions about the different worlds that exist within this story. They were only briefly mentioned in the anime. I wanted to know more about the Celestial World, Nether World, and the Spirit World. Also, it was never fully explained how Kobato ended up in her situation. We never fully get the extent of what Kobato's wish really is. Just tidbits.  I honestly felt a little bit confused by the end because of the lack of it. I only found out about more backstories through the Wikipedia page. It would have been better if they included that in the anime. Although, we can't really fault the creators of the anime because the manga was still ongoing when it was adapted. It's intriguing to read to manga just to find out more about the story that wasn't included in the anime.

SPOILERY THOUGHTS AND REACTIONS

  • THINGS THAT I LOVE:
    • Seeing Ioryogi enjoy the different foods that were given to him throughout the series. He was so adorable there.
    • Sayaka and Kazuto were able to mend their relationship. I get that Kazuto is the bad guy in the beginning, but he only did that to protect Sayaka. Although, what kind of father did he have to target his daughter-in-law?
    • The ending. It felt a little bit rushed, but I was happy that we got to see Kobato and Fujimoto again. Fujimoto was able to reach his dream job before they met again. I'm glad that they were able to remember each other even through magic. It's funny though that the reborn Kobato is rich. They wouldn't have to worry about money anymore.
    • The story about the author of the fireflies book. It was bittersweet. I cried during that part because you can really feel his regret about not attending his date with the woman he loves.
    • One of the children tried to look for a four-leaf clover to make Kobato happy. It was such a wholesome scene.
    • Ioryogi's protective nature. He gets mad at Kobato a lot of times (she honestly deserved it), but when she someone threatens her, he's there as a protective father.
    • Finding out that Ioryogi's true name is Iorogi, but Kobato can't pronounce it. He got stuck with the Ioryogi name because of her, yet he loved it.
    • Ioryogi begged Ginsei to give the bottle back because he didn't want Kobato not to reach her wish.
    • Fujimoto tried to protect Kobato when the Gingko tree died.
    • One of the gangsters became nicer after Kobato comforted him when he was sick.
    • Ioryogi got mad at Kobato because of the reindeer hat, yet he wore it outside to go see his friends.
    • Ioryogi begged Ushagi not to take Kobato yet and to extend her deadline.
    • Fujimoto cheered Kobato on when she tried to work hard to gather supplies for Valentine's Day party.
  • I disliked the part where Kobato got mad at Fujimoto because he didn't want to help his classmates with their reports (since they would only copy his work).
  • The cat, Milk, was so adorable. I love cats.
  • Kobato was really lucky that she met Sayaka. She managed to find work and a job at the same time. Sayaka is a saint.
  • I found Kobato quite meddlesome during the part where she helped Mutsumi with her crush. I don't know, it feels a little off for me that she had to do that. What if Mutsumi wasn't ready for that?
  • I'm really confused about the scenes where Kobato's random memories were shown. There was a guy that looked like Fujimoto, but the Kobato there looked like a child? Or was it Fujimoto and their child? So confusing. I wish that there was a scene showing Kobato's backstory back when she was still alive. Also, did she die young? If the child is hers and not her, how?
  • I am amazed that Kohaku came from another story in the CLAMP universe. I just wish it was shown in the anime why her situation with the doctor is like that. Was it a punishment?
  • I was really annoyed at Fujimoto in the beginning. I get that it's his defense mechanism against pain, but he was a jerk back then. I'm glad that Kobato managed to get through to him. They were adorable together.
  • I find it quite funny that Chitose's daughters looked like the characters from Chobits. I didn't know they were from the same universe when I started this.
  • It's funny that every time Kobato tries to cook, it feels like an experiment. It was funny that the first soup she tried to make looked extremely horrible, but tasted good.
  • I kind of got fed up with Kobato's song. She used it to comfort people for every occasion.
  • Was Kobato even human before her contract? She didn't know anything. It seemed like she lost her common sense, and there were times that she had to make Ioryogi repeat his explanations when it was about something so simple. It was frustrating.
  • Fujimoto's sarcasm about Kobato's actions was funny.
  • I wanted to slap some sense on Kobato during the hide-and-seek game. She looked for them in ridiculous places. It was so stupid.
  • I wanted to know why Ioryogi declared war with the Celestial World. His companions just said that he wanted something dearly.
  • I searched for Ioryogi's true form. He was handsome. I wish we saw it in the anime.
  • Kobato's artworks were so ridiculously funny. Sayaka, Fujimoto, and Ioryogi couldn't figure out what kind of animals she was making. It's even funnier that Domoto got the bunny one right.
  • I felt bad for Domoto when he confessed to Kobato, and she didn't even get it. She thought he was just comforting her.
  • Domoto was a very lovely character. He just wanted Kobato to be happy, even though it wasn't because of him. He even got Fujimoto to spend time with her.
  • Kazuto's character design reminded me of Lelouch for some reason.
  • I was proud of Kobato's motivation to promote their bazaar. It was a success because of her.
  • The scene where Ioryogi got stuck as a prize for a game, and he tried his best to avoid getting hit by the players was very funny. Who the hell was that old woman who looked like a professional?
  • I wonder who the guy with the crescent moon patch is? The one that Ginsei delivered to.
  • Kobato's interaction with the world-jumping travelers was really cute. They were kind, and they helped Kobato out too.
  • It was heartbreaking to see the daycare get torn down. Still, Sayaka and the others can go start over in another place.
